This position is within corporate EHS to provide responsive safety services to all business units across the company. This position has specific responsibilities to: 1. Review existing safety systems and recommend upgrades to senior executives. 2. Proactively identify plans to reduce hazards, hazard exposures and hazardous activities that pose significant risk to the organization. 3. Assess existing safety standards and develop for approval upgrades and new standards required to ensure a safe working environment for all employees and contractors. 4. Ensure that safety policies, standards, and procedures are maintained for each of TransAlta's generation facilities in an ISO 14001 / OHSAS 18001 EHS management system. This includes coal, gas, hydro and renewable energy operations. 5. Develop and implement an umbrella corporate H&S management system setting objectives for the entire organization. 6. Provide expert advice on safety systems, trends, response actions, investigations, and interpretation of health and safety regulations. 7. Develop the programs and initiatives to build and sustain a safety culture that becomes a "way of life" for employees and contractors. 8. Provide oversight and conduct safety audits and inspections across the company. Coach and provide advice and support for safety inspections by senior management. 9. Enhance the existing safety system to address process safety hazards 10. Represent TransAlta on safety initiatives of industry associations, governmental bodies and other stakeholder groups related to safety. Represent the company's interests in the development of new regulatory changes or programs and serve on industry committees responsible for exploring health, safety, and wellness programs. 11. Deliver extensive internal and external reporting on safety performance, including TransAlta's quarterly report to a committee of the Board of Directors, monthly cross-company Target Zero Team meetings, regulatory reports to governments, and regular internal assessments to senior management of progress against safety and health objectives. 12. Provide strong mentoring, coaching and employee development support to field staff. |

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: Post secondary degree in a related field. The individual will ensure that TransAlta's worldwide business operations and growth will consistently meet and exceed all safety, health and hygiene regulatory requirements, industry standards, and internal safety policies and standards. TransAlta seeks to become a world leader in safety systems and culture. • 15 plus years of experience in the health and safety field • Hold CRSP designation • Experience in safety at both operating facilities and head office • Possess a broad knowledge of health and safety regulations in a variety of jurisdictions, particularly Canada and USA • A solid understanding of operations safety and process safety • Experience with contractor safety management and practices • A thorough knowledge of safety theory and practice, particularly in the areas of heavy industry and mining. • Experience in safety incident investigations • Knowledge of what constitutes a strong safety culture and how to sustain it; demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation. • Experience with safety metrics, trend, analysis, and interpretation to focus safety efforts • Solid analytical skills • A solid track record in building and sustaining well-performing teams. • An ability to lead diverse individuals on cross-company task group teams • A strong service mentality to support internal customers; ability to build and maintain effective relationships across a diverse set of key stakeholders. • A proven ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills; this ability must be evident within one's own team as well as within the organization overall. • A strong communicator with a proven ability to successfully influence solid management decisions. |
