DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
- Lead the incident investigation process using FortisAlberta standards and Taproot investigation protocols; this includes providing on-site leadership and support to the affected Area Manager and writing the formal report which is later issued to upper management.
- Conduct random and scheduled work site audits of on FortisAlberta employees and external contractors; this includes the authority to stop the work site if required, write up safety infractions, recommend corrective actions, and write a formal safety audit report to local and upper management.
- Develop and provide expertise into the selection of suitable hazard controls including engineering, administrative, procedural and personal protective equipment standards.
- Interpret Regulations and Codes such as AEUC, OH&S, Pipeline, Canadian Electrical Code, CSA Overhead/Underground).
- Create, change, and develop safety standards, programs, procedures, and guidelines.
- As the Electrical Safety Codes Officer, this position will complete Quality Management Plan inspections, conduct compliance reviews for third-party non-compliance situations in order to ensure that FortisAlberta maintains its self-accredited status given by the Safety Codes Council through Municipal Affairs.
- Inspect the percentage of all work orders to ensure construction meets all applicable codes.
- Act as resource for the emergency response planning process.
- Initiate and conduct in-house training programs, public safety presentations, and hazard board demonstrations
- Participate in safety meetings for operational groups.
- Represent FortisAlberta on external boards and committee’s as deemed appropriate by the Manager of Health and Safety.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Strong analytical skills required to gather technical information, resolve issues and evaluate possible solutions.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders; this includes excellent communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
- Solid organizational and time management skills in order to prioritize numerous projects and competing demands.
- Demonstrated presentation skills with the ability to create and deliver presentations and training programs tailored to various audience types
- Demonstrated initiative in recognizing opportunities for improvement and efficiency in processes, methodologies and practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- A Grade 12 diploma plus an electrical trades certification (power line technician, electrician or power electrician) are required.
- Experience as a Safety Codes Officer, Safety Coordinator or in the area of health and safety is preferred.
- Working knowledge of distribution operations and construction is an asset
- Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or related designation would be an asset
- Able to meet the requirements for a designation as a Part 2 Electrical, Safety Codes Officer within the first year in this position
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License.
Special Conditions:
- The successful candidate must hold a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s permit.
- Some travel with possible overnight stays is required.
